RENOVATING IN BRITTANY

The choice of property ripe for renovation is nearly endless around rural Brittany. Why is that? The truth is that rural Brittany was and still is to-day, a poor area, many of these houses have not been updated for many, many years. Often they lack even the basic amenities, are in generally a poor state of repair, and can be owned by several siblings, none of whom will maintain it without the others paying their share, hence it doesn't get done.
Even with exchange rates fluctuating, as they are, houses here can still seem a bargain when comparing the prices with those back in the UK, but the cost of renovating some of these properties can seriously outweigh their future value, on the other hand the tranquility, way of life and often the views can easily override all other factors. The best advice I can offer is to view the property in winter, if at all possible, or at least in inclemeny weather, as it is very easy to be seduced by the sunshine.

Grants may be available from some communes to restore some properties and can be substantial, up to 40% of the cost, to acheive this however the work must be undertaken by french registered companies such as ourselves, but each case is taken on its own merit and is subject to the communes decision.  It is a fact that the cost of renovation can be as much as building a new house, bear that in mind when looking at property, and never take anything on face value.

Don't let me put you off, there are many beautifully restored buildings in Brittany, and we ourselves have been proud to have been involved with some of them, just bear in mind the costs of renovation when negotiating the purchase price.
